The 2024 ACC Residency Program explores the themes of 'Artificial Intelligence, Humanity, and Multiverse' with the aim of reconsidering the relationship between humans and non-humans. This exploration extends to both human-nonhuman and nonhuman-nonhuman relationships to uncover the underlying principles and meanings governing the world and universe within the complex network of relationships. Through this exploration, the program aims to contemplate the evolution of human life and consciousness, alongside advancements in artificial intelligence, all within the context of the multiverse rather than a singular universe. Additionally, it seeks to foster a comprehensive understanding about the future of humanity by reflecting a wide range of viewpoints from creators and producers.
The design was based on two keywords. First, since it is a large event that recruits artists from all over the world, 'diversity' is important. Therefore, I decided that it would be more appropriate to mix several fonts rather than unifying the entire title with one letter. Second, most of ACC's performing arts are performed on stage. And the performers are transformed into artists by being illuminated. The Korean word 'illumination (Jomyeong)' means light, but it also means looking at an object from a certain perspective. Inspired by this point, I assumed each letter as a performer and tried to 'illuminate (Jomyeong)' them. If so, the entire poster can be naturally thought of as a kind of stage. Lights are turned off and on throughout the stage, and a simple motion poster was produced as if illuminating a performer.
It was created solely through Illustrator. However, for making the lettering, I used the options provided by the program, tools with unpredictable results were mainly used.
For instance, The outline of the randomly selected typeface was applied with an atypical line (which can be found in the program library) rather than a solid line. Afterwards, effects such as softness and roughness were applied and the numerical values were adjusted to create unexpected letters. This lettering production method was used to actively reflect the concept of the performing arts open call. Meanwhile, I didn't just create interesting letters, I made sure they fit together harmoniously.
