The North Korean Human Rights Museum welcomes you to its inaugural exhibition in 2023, titled ‘The Echo Never Stops.’ We live in an era where we have transcended past times of pervasive state control and oppression, and now freely express our thoughts and words through various mediums such as the internet, social media, and creative activities. However, there exists a place where all these expressions, which we often take for granted, are suppressed: North Korea."
Frequently used expressions like 'I'm hungry' or 'I'm tired' could lead to being labeled as a political criminal in North Korea. Even seemingly ordinary words become a matter of life and death in the country, directly tied to survival.
Despite strict control, the flow of information persists. The recently enacted and more forcefully implemented the Reactionary Ideology and Culture Rejection Act and the Pyongyang Cultural Language Protection Act are evidence of this control, aimed at regulating 'words,' the fundamental mode of expression. Amidst the paradoxes of our era, this exhibition celebrates 'freedom of expression' and sheds light on the significance of 'words'—the most fundamental means of human expression.
