WESS shares the space as a temporary platform in our attention to the common challenges in the distribution of (particularly post-exhibition) catalogues faced by artists and curators who independently organize their own exhibitions. In addition #to the distribution of catalogues, WESS Exhibition Publication intends #to review past exhibitions through the exhibition publications, and #to consider the relationship between volatilized exhibitions and publications left behind.

A Temporary Alternative to Difficulties in Catalogue Distribution
As public funds have recently started to allow more artists and independent curators to exhibit without the help of institutions, there are also increasingly more limitations and challenges in distributing catalogues (post-exhibition catalogues in particular). Understanding such reality, WESS Exhibition Publication is an attempt to share the space of WESS as an offline platform for the distribution of the publications.

A Conversation for Review Past Exhibitions
While countless exhibitions take place every year, there’s a very limited number of exhibitions that receive public highlights. And among the exhibitions, valuable exhibitions that disappear without having been viewed by many people due to limitations in location, promotion, and schedules keep being created and vanished. WESS Exhibition Publication hopes to offer an opportunity to revive past exhibitions through the publications that remain, and share in-depth conversations about the stories and works from the past exhibitions that have disappeared.

Thoughts on the Relationship between Exhibition/Artwork and Publication
The exhibition publication called the catalogue, goes beyond simply being a record, to becoming a part of the work / curatorial practice, as well as a medium for ways of looking at the exhibition in news or diverse ways. With artists, curators, and graphic designers who create the publications together, WESS Exhibition Publication proposes to reconsider the process of the collaboration, relationship, the possibilities of expanding and reinterpreting in between.

Opencall Poster, 594 × 841mm

I imagined the starting point of the numerous catalogs left behind the exhibition. It would start by creating a new document in the program. As a reminder of that, I connected empty squares that were not filled with anything. On the other hand, this exhibition had to use only Korean titles. To this end, after selecting an English typeface that can reflect the theme of the exhibition, it was dismantled and recombined to create a Korean title.
